McLaren Vale
The very first wineries in McLaren Vale were the Seaview and Hardy wineries started up by John Reynell and Thomas Hardy back in the 1850s.
They were required to make heavy, dry table wines due to the demands of bulk wine merchants and exporters of the 19th century. Fortified wines were more in demand only when the 20th century came. The end of World War II also saw the increase in local sales and in the 1950s was when several McLaren Vale wineries started to package small parcels of selected wines for cellar door tastings and sales.
Table wines have become more popular in the recent years and we see more wineries popping up. Majority of which focusing on the production of Shiraz, Cabernet and Grenache.
With over 190 wineries and 80 cellar doors found in McLaren Vale today, the region's wines continue to make their mark on the Australian wine market, winning awards and trophies.
