Carignans
Pronunciation: care-in-yen
Carignan is a Spanish origin variety originally known as Mazuelo. It is believed to originate in north-east Spain in the province of Cariñena (which later became Carignan in French). This variety is late in budding and very late in ripening so it's best planted in a Mediterranean climate.
Carignan has high tannins, high in acid, and possesses a deep color. Though it originated in Spain, the grape is mostly planted now in France with nearly 80% of the total area in Languedoc-Roussillon.
