Grechetto

Pronunciation: greh-ketto

The names Greco and Grechetto have been given to several district southern Italian varieties used to produce sweet wines, with more than a nod to the traditional sweet-wine styles of ancient Greece (Costacurta et al. 2004), but this is not necessarily an indication that these varieties are Greek in origin.

Thick skins and therefore good resistance to downy mildew. Mid to late ripening. The specialty of Umbria, central Italy. Orvieto DOC, Umbria’s best-known white wine, is a blend of TREBBIANO TOSCANO and VERDELLO with 15-25% Grechetto (or other local varieties), and 15-40% is allowed in Torgiano DOC, another Umbrian Trebbiano-dominated blend.
