Bordeaux’s over-achiever: Château Sociando-Mallet

Château Sociando-Mallet is a wine producer from Bordeaux – the Haut-Médoc appellation to be exact. Its history dates back to the 17th Century, but it was only in 1969 that Jean Gautreau purchased the estate that had fallen apart and restored it to its former glory. Back then the estate was a mere 7 hectares, and in the past 30 years, Gautreau has expanded it to more than 80 hectares now.

The Chateau’s first wine – Château Sociando-Mallet  is a full-bodied wine with a deep, dark colour. It possesses a complex bouquet “usually dominated by black fruit aromas with a touch of minerality and  well-integrated, elegant oak”. This wine becomes more balanced and complex with age as well.

Today’s promotion features  the 2011 vintage of Château Sociando-Mallet. While the 2011 year saw some strange weather conditions and a tricky  harvest, not all wineries suffered in this year. Cabernet Francs on the Left Bank generally fared better, compared to Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.

According to Robert Parker about the Château Sociando-Mallet (2011), “... there is no lacking concentration in this wine, which is clearly of  classified growth quality… it is a real revelation in a vintage such as 2011”.
