Offer: Our Top 25 Burgundy Wines, Rated by Burghound

There is no doubt that the Burgundy wine region is one of the most prestigious wine producing regions in the world, with many of its most famous wines used as investments. Typically, Burgundy wines are single varietals of a high degree of complexity and elegance. These are typically pinot noir and chardonnay, which in themselves have a distinct character and touches. Four levels of appellation are recognised in this classification: Regional, Village, Premier Cru, and the highest  Grand Cru.

Based on Burghound's wise words, we present our top 25 Burgundy wines, most of which are grand crus. A true expression of terroir, these wines are incredibly elegant, delicate, and aged wonderfully.

Domaine Ponsot Montrachet   2010

"The nose here is quite simply fantastically complex with its aromas of acacia blossom, ripe white peach, spiced pear, apple and wet stone that flirt with the exotic but stop just short of it. The rich, full-bodied and overtly powerful flavors are opulent and very concentrated before culminating in a massively long and explosive finish where notes of mint and citrus surface. This is a huge wine even by the already outsized standards of Montrachet though note that plenty of cellar time will be required. This is a 'wow' wine and if you can find it, buy it." - Burghound, 94-97 points.

Domaine Ponsot Clos de La Roche Cuvee VV    2014

"There is enough wood to notice along with a hint of menthol on the markedly earthy red and dark berry fruit aromas where background hints of spice and floral elements are in evidence. The overtly powerful and concentrated broad-shouldered flavours display almost painful intensity before culminating in an explosively long and very firmly structured finish where once again a hint of bitter cherry appears. This is an interesting wine of contrasts as the mid-palate, even with all of its intensity, possesses a caressing palate feel yet the finish is bold, robust and unyielding." - Burghound, 94-97 points.

Domaine Trapet Pere & Fils Chambertin   2015

"Interestingly this is aromatically quite similar to the nose of the Latricières though there is just a bit more wood in evidence plus a hint of menthol. By contrast there is more size, weight, power and muscle to the big-bodied and equally mineral-driven flavors that also brim with copious amounts of dry extract that coats the palate and buffers the very firm but not hard tannic backbone on the driving, hugely long and youthfully austere finale. This is an exquisitely poised Chambertin that is very much built-to-age and is going to need a minimum of 10 years and once again, is a wine that should last for decades. In a word, brilliant." - Burghound, 97 points.

Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche    2011

"Much like the Romanée St. Vivant, here the nose is overtly floral in character with a beautifully layered array of hoisin, soy, clove, anise, black cherry coulis, sandalwood and exotic jasmine and pekoe tea. The sleek, rich and impressively concentrated broad-shouldered flavors exude an almost pungent minerality on the clean and exceptionally persistent finale where the only nit is a touch of backend warmth. Despite being very firmly structured, the mid-palate density is such that this could probably be approached after only 10 to 12 years. With that said, the 2020 LT should be capable of at least 20 years of improvement and 25 to 30 would not surprise me unduly." - Burghound, 96 points.
