Comte Liger-Belair

Comte Liger-Belair just commenced in 2002 leading by Louis-Michel Liger-Belair, an agricultural engineer, and oenologist. Despite the fact that the domain is barely new, Louis-Michel has a rich and long history of winemaking  dating back 1815. His great-great-grandfathers have been vignerons for decades owning the most prestigious appellations such as La Romanee,  La Tache, La Grande Rue and many more. It was just in 1933 following the death of Comtesse Liger-Belair that those vineyards were auctioned off.

Louis-Michel's grandfather , Comte Michel together with his brother, Just, buy back La Romanee, Reignots, and les Chaumes and his son, Comte Henry continued to manage the domaine until Louis-Michel took over and started his Comte Liger-Belair in 2000.

Currently, Louis-Michel manages 8.7 hectares of vineyards in Nuits St. Georges, Flagey Echezeaux, and Vosne-Romanee. He also believes that the quality of wines lies into the work put in the vineyards more than the winery. He also has his principle of not over extracting the grapes as he believes that all that does not come naturally (tannins, color) cannot be durably ‘ fixed’ in the wines and will therefore not be stable in the long term once in bottle.
