Léoville Barton, 2ème Cru Classé
Upon arriving in Bordeaux in 1725, Thomas Barton founded a wine dynasty that still remains as one of the longest-standing family legacies of all the Grand Cru Classés of 1855. His grandson Hugh Barton, a plot from Léoville in 1826 and renamed it Léoville Barton. Hugh’s passion and pride in his wine were only to grow when he saw Château Léoville Barton classified as a Second Grand Cru Classé.
Six generations later, the Barton story continues with Anthony Barton and his daughter Lilian, who now represents the tenth generation of the family living in Bordeaux.
Vineyard
A rare terroir in Médoc gives the Barton Wines their signature style. Their primary grape varieties are Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc, with an average vine age of 37 years and the oldest plot dating back to 1953. A high planting density of 9100 vines per hectare is maintained through replanting every year.
At Chateau Léoville Barton, preserving the vines and the surrounding environment is of utmost importance. A variety of environmentally friendly practices are used, including organic fertilisers, ploughing all vineyards, recycling waste, and using biodegradable staples. It takes a team of 120 every year to prune during the winter season and harvest the clusters by hand to maintain the quality of the fruit.
Wine
Leoville Barton is a harmonious, elegant wine with no heaviness. A medley of flavours, including candied plums, apricots and spices leave you feeling euphoric. Silky tannins give this wine the best possible expression of its exceptional terroir.
