Michel Niellon
Producing remarkable wines for more than 5 decades, Michel Niellon has been a reference of quality in Chassagne-Montrachet since 1950s. Together with Michel's father, Marcel, the father and son tandem has established a huge following despite having a minimal production from only around 4 hectares of vines, which include small holdings in Chevalier and Bâtard-Montrachet. Beginning 1991, Michel Niellon has shared vineyard and winemaking duties with his son-in-law, Michel Coutoux, and was also recently joined by Michel's grandson, Mathieu Bresson.
Today the winery has seven and a half hectares of vines, all in Chassagne-Montrachet. The winery plows their vineyards for weed control and doesn't use any herbicides. They also practice lutte raisonnée or using fewer chemicals and less aggressively to control pest and mildew. Furthermore, Niellon considers acidity primarily by not waiting too long in harvesting the grapes. He always prefers to pick earlier than later.
