Smith Haut Lafitte, Cru Classé de Graves

"Florence and Daniel Cathiard fell in love with Château Smith Haut Lafitte in 1990 and acquired it with the firm intention of perpetuating the wine’s tradition of excellence.

“Our philosophy can be summed up in one sentence – to do everything possible to make each vintage of red and white wine worthy of our magnificent terroir “.

After three years spent renovating the estate, the Cathiards came to live there, in the 18th century chartreuse dating from George Smith’s time, in order to devote themselves to overseeing winegrowing with the help of a talented and motivated team.

Since everything comes from the soil, we at Château Smith Haut Lafitte do our utmost
to respect nature both in the vineyard (biodiversity) and the cellar.

Château Smith Haut Lafitte plants vines propagated from our vineyards thanks to our very own vine nursery on Ile de Lalande. This island location and protected ecosystem enables us to maintain the vine’s genetic diversity as well as the complexity of our wines.

We do all we can to enhance microbial life by adding our own organic compost and protect the soil by planting hedges and trees. In addition, there are beehives on the estate and we plough the white wine vineyard’s fragile slopes with a horse. Maintaining wooded areas and hedges not only embellishes the countryside, but also enhances the harmony we unceasingly seek with nature: 'winegrowers are landscape architects'."
