Château Trottevieille: Unveiling the elegance of an exceptional terroir

The name is said to derive from the fact that an old lady lived there in this chartreuse in the 14th century. This lady would frequently stroll down to a nearby crossroads where stagecoaches made their stop during their journeys from Bordeaux. Given her penchant for hurrying to catch these coaches, the people of Saint-Émilion affectionately referred to her as 'la trotte vieille' – the 'old trot'.

Elevated to the Premier Grand Cru of Saint-Émilion classification in 1955, Château TrotteVieille is celebrated as one of the finest wines in Saint-Émilion. In 1947, Marcel Borie acquired the property and today the estate is overseen by the Castéja family.

The vineyard is situated on a superb slope to the east of the village of Saint-Émilion and encompasses a 12-hectare terroir, evenly divided between Merlot and Cabernet Franc, with a touch of Cabernet Sauvignon. Château TrotteVieille is one of the few remaining estates to cultivate ancient Cabernet Franc vines, with roots dating back over 140 years, before the devastating phylloxera outbreak.

Vintage 2024:

Despite very low yields, the vintage stands out for the exceptional quality of its wines: elegant, aromatically fresh, with silky tannins and delicate fruit expression. An airy, round, and floral wine — the result of a challenging year, masterfully managed.

Tasting Notes:

Bright garnet with brilliant highlights, TrotteVieille 2024 shows remarkable aromatic intensity, with notes of red fruits (raspberry) and fresh flowers. A smooth and ripe attack opens the palate, followed by a silky texture rich in flavor yet brimming with freshness. The wine unfolds with impressive length. TrotteVieille 2024 beautifully expresses both its terroir and the exceptional proportion of Cabernet Franc in the blend.
